Water improvement programmes
Where public drinking water quality is at risk of failing to meet the regulatory standards and the existing water treatment is considered to be inadequate, the Inspectorate can agree a water treatment improvement programme with Northern Ireland Water.
This process is know as 'Authorisation of Departures'.
There are currently Authorised Departures for the chemical group Trihalomethanes (THMs) and the pesticides, MCPA and mecoprop:
- The Authorised Departures for THMs in 2008 applied to 9 of Northern Ireland Water's Treatment Works.
- The Authorised Departures for Pesticides in 2008 applied to two of Northern Ireland Water's Treatment Works.
