Drinking water quality and testing
During 2008, Northern Ireland Water Ltd (NI Water) sampled drinking water across Northern Ireland to test for compliance with the standards in the Water Quality (Water Supply) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2007.
The regulations require that sampling programmes are in place at:
- Water treatment works
- Service reservoirs
- Water supply points
- At the consumers’ taps.
Overall drinking water quality
In 2008, NI Water carried out 122,763 tests of which 99.69% passed. This is a small improvement on 2007 where 99.60% passed. This is mainly due to improved chemical compliance in water supply zones, and microbiological quality at service reservoirs and water treatment works.
