Waste Management Licensing
It is an offence to carry out activities including keeping, recycling, crushing, baling, composting or dismantling waste materials without an appropriate permit, waste management licence or registered exemption.
Whether you need a permit, waste management licence or an exemption will depend on the types and quantity of wastes which you are handling and the activity being carried out on the site.

Exemptions from Waste Management Licensing
Regulation 17 of The Waste Management Licensing Regulations (NI) 2003 provides for exemptions from waste management licensing. If a waste management activity is exempt then a waste management licence is not required. In cases where an exemption does not apply it is an offence to subject controlled waste to disposal or recovery operations without the benefit of a waste management licence.
The exemptions from waste management licensing are mainly for small-scale waste storage and waste recovery operations and are subject to certain limitations. The specific limitations for waste activities are detailed in Schedule 2 to the 2003 Regulations. We can provide further advice and guidance regarding the requirements of the various exemptions.
