Radioactivity
The Industrial Pollution and Radiochemical Inspectorate (IPRI) is responsible for controlling the keeping and use of radioactive material and the disposal of radioactive waste under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993. Certificates of Registration are issued to permit the keeping and use of radioactive material and Certificates of Authorisation are used to permit the accumulation and disposal of radioactive waste. The Inspectorate also enforces the statutory control of the transport of radioactive material.
As well as regulatory responsibilities, IPRI also carries out environmental monitoring of the impact of nuclear discharges into the Irish Sea on the Northern Ireland coastline.
The Inspectorate has an important role to play in the Northern Ireland response should there be an overseas peacetime nuclear incident. During radioactive emergencies IPRI would work closely with other Northern Ireland Departments likely to be involved. We are also responsible for mapping levels of radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, in dwellings throughout Northern Ireland.
