Agricultural regulations in Northern Ireland

Last updated: 1 September 2009

The Agriculture Regulations team deals with three aspects of current legislation that affects farmers in Northern Ireland. They include:

1. Silage Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil (SSAFO)

2 European Commission (EC) Nitrates Directive

The EC Nitrates Directive aims to reduce or prevent the pollution of waters caused by the use of inorganic fertiliser and manure on farmland.

It is designed to protect drinking water supplies and to stop wider ecological damage. The directive requires farmers to put in place a number of measures to protect waters from nitrates.

3. Groundwater Authorisations

For the majority of farms in Northern Ireland, this means an authorisation for the disposal of waste sheep dips and pesticides.
