Waste and Resources

  

We are responsible for the implementation of waste management policy and the promotion of a more sustainable approach to dealing with waste in Northern Ireland.
The purpose of the Land and Resource Management Unit is the delivery of European and Northern Ireland Waste Management Legislation through waste strategy and regulation.

• Regulation

  This section includes information on how to safely and legally dispose of different types of waste, e.g. hazardous waste, batteries and waste electrical and electronic equipment.

• Legislation

  A list of the current legislation for varioius waste activities can be found here, at both the European and Northern Ireland level. Brief explanations are given for some of those most commonly used, for example, the Waste Framework Directive and the Landfill Directive.

• Public Registers

  Under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997, we are required to maintain a public register containing certain particulars relating to waste management activities. We are committed to conducting our business in as open and transparent a manner as possible and the maintenance of public registers assists in this.
