Conservation of the Historic Environment

We work to sustain the Historic Environment through a range of initiatives to support the repair, maintenance and conservation of historic monuments and buildings. We do this through our Conservation Works Team and by providing management agreements or grant-aid , commenting on planning applications and providing advice and guidance to owners. Use the links below to find out how we do this for designated features.

We also aim to address the problem of redundancy or deterioration of historic structures through the Built Heritage at Risk in Northern Ireland (BHARNI) project. This project engages with owners or potential buyers and works to encourage the rescue of those structures in the poorest condition. Grant-aid has been targeted towards this project.Picture of Ballycastle town centre

While most of these designations and controls are managed by the Built Heritage Directorate of NIEA, Planning ServiceOpens in new window. also plays an important role. It is largely responsible for heritage controls which are area based and also has an important input into final decisions on listed buildings, enforcement against inappropriate change for listed buildings and the final determination of planning applications which affect the wider setting of historic buildings and monuments.
