Biological basics
The categorising of species (taxonomy) and the associated assessment of species status, i.e. how common or rare a particular plant or animal is, forms the basis of the biodiversity agenda. Research and development support of this area by ouselves includes, where appropriate, taxonomic research (Red grouse
), biological recording and dissemination, and also interpretation of species related data e.g. distribution Dragonfly Ireland
and status Red Data
.
The cataloging of our species and habitats is vital to our ability to understand and manage biodiversity. Since it would take the NIEA an enormous amount of time and effort to note every individual of every species, it is important that we encourage national recording as a way of increasing the number of people who submit records of species. Recording is also a way of encouraging the people of Northern Ireland to appreciate our wealth of species and habitats and get involved in the mapping of our natural heritage.
