Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control

The Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive, (the IPPC Directive) was adopted in October 1996. The IPPC Directive requires an integrated approach to the permitting and ongoing regulation of certain activities. The requirements of the Directive are similar in many ways to the requirements on processes subject to integrated central control under the Control (Northern Ireland) Order 1997, however there are important differences:

  • The Directive applies an integrated approach to a wider range of activities: and
  • The Directive requires that a wider range of environmental issues are taken into account, such    as noise, energy efficiency, site condition, raw material usage etc.

The Environment (Northern Ireland) Order 2002 brings in the legislation to enable the Department to implement the Directive in Northern Ireland.

The above Regulations are now in place and anyone wishing to check them can do so. We acknowledge the importance of providing consistent technical guidance across all of the UK. We are therefore participating in a co-operative project with other UK environmental agencies to produce common technical guidance for operators and inspectors. (Information is also being exchanged with the Irish Environmental Protection Agency.)
