Regulatory Guidance

In 1997 guidance on regulating the disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste to specialised facilities on land was published and is now out of print and no longer available. This guidance has now been updated because of;

  • developments in UK law and policy
  • revised international advice and recommendations
  • and also recognition that specific guidance for near-surface facilities was required.

The Industrial Pollution and Radiochemical Inspectorate (IPRI) along with the Environment Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) have produced a updated set of guidelines available in May 2009. The guidance sets out the principles and requirements that a developer or operator of a radioactive waste disposal facility is expected to meet to ensure protection of people and the environment, both now and in the future.
