Legislation

The Industrial Pollution and Radiochemical Inspectorate (IPRI) enforce the following legislation:

  • Radioactive Substances Act 1993
  • Radioactive Substances (Carriage by Road) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1983.

Radioactive Substances Act 1993 ((Acts of the UK Parliament 1993 (c12))

The Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA 1993) provides for the registration of radioactive materials and premises and also authorisation for the accumulation and disposal of radioactive waste by the Chief Radiochemical Inspector.

Radioactive Substances (Carriage by Road) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1983 (CAR)

Under the CAR Regulations radioactive materials (except in certain circumstances) must not be consigned or carried by road in Northern Ireland otherwise than in accordance with the provisions set out in therein. Besides certain general prohibitions, requirements are imposed by transport of radioactive materials to the health of persons engaged therein and other persons.
