Peatlands Park
Peatlands Park was specifically established to raise awareness of peatland habitat issues. The peat here has been forming for aound 10,000 years. There are over 16km of paths leading visitors through various habitats within the park.
The park is rich in insects, particularly butterflies, moths, dragonflies and damselflies and many woodland and wetland birds and various species of nest here. Grey squirrels, badgers and hares are also present, while lizards and newts can be found in the open bog areas.
A short stroll around the Bog Garden will give you a chance to see almost all of the flora and fauna associated with this precious peatland habitat.

Peatlands Park gives pupils a rare opportunity to experience peatland ecosystems and the impact human activity has on them, making the park an invaluable resource study. Home to two National Nature Reserves – Mullenakill Bog and Annagarriff Wood, with a network of paths and waymarked routes makes access to the sites of study safe and easy. Teachers can use this site to provide pupils with a basic knowledge of the habitat and to raise their awareness of how we interact and impact on Peatlands.
