Historic Buildings Council

The Historic Buildings Council consists of 15 members who volunteer their services to provide advice to the Department of the Environment under the Planning (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 and include the following areas: -

1. On the listing of buildings of special architectural or historic interest;

2. On the designating of conservation areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance;

3. to keep under review, and from time to time report to the Department on the general state of preservation of listed buildings;

4. to advise the Department of such matters relating to the preservation of buildings of special architectural or historic interest as the Department may refer to it;

5. such other functions as are conferred on it by any statutory provision;

6. on applications for the exemption of listed buildings from Capital Transfer Tax;

7. on the issue of certificates stating that buildings are not intended to be listed.
