Jordan's Castle
Located in the village of Ardglass, County Down, between Kildare Street and Quay Street, Jordan’s Castle is the largest of a group of tower-houses in the area that demonstrate the importance of Ardglass as a town and port in the Middle Ages.
The castle is named after Simon Jordan who withstood a long siege in the tower in 1601. It was bought by the antiquarian Francis Joseph Bigger in 1911, who restored and furnished it.
There are remains of other castles and historic buildings close to Jordan's Castle. The substantial remains of Margaret's Castle and Cowd Castle are nearby. The Newark, remains of a row of merchant's stores is also close by, but is in private ownership, while King's Castle near St Nicholas' Parish Church appears to be a 19th-century rebuilding on the site of a medieval tower-house.
Jordan's Castle is currently closed to the public due to important structural assessment works being carried out.
