Inspired Steps in Time
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) announced the winners of its ‘Step in Time Competition 2008’ at Carrickfergus Castle today. 100 guests celebrated pupils’ artistic and literary endeavours in the historic solar room of the 12th century Castle Keep.
Accompanied by the sound of medieval music the pupils and guests enjoyed demonstrations of medieval weaponry before the all important awards were presented.
The Agency also took the opportunity to launch it’s latest educational DVD on the history of Carrickfergus Castle. The teachers present were also given copies of the new Carrickfergus Castle teachers’ notes, which form a central part of NIEA’s innovative and creative resources for teachers and pupils visiting the castle.
The ‘Step in Time Competition’ aims to enhance pupils’ understanding of History through other academic subjects. Entries were invited from Key Stages 2 and 3 students in English, Art and History from across Northern Ireland, who had visited Carrickfergus Castle.
Anne Hayes, NIEA Education Manager explains:
“We want children to gain more from their visit to Carrickfergus Castle than simply a guided tour and this is the fifth year we have run this exciting competition. We have been updating resources and activities throughout our sites to compliment the launch of the revised curriculum and we now offer greater choice in terms of cross curricular activities and sensory learning.
“Entries were received from pupils across Northern Ireland and the judges struggled to agree the winners of many categories “
