Built Heritage

Built Heritage is the created structures of past generations. This ranges from megalithic tombs to historic buildings  designed landscapes and underground archaeology. The Historic Environment includes  all of the effects of human activity on our surroundings. Northern Ireland was first settled 9000 years ago and elements of every culture which has evolved since then remain in our landscape.

To clarify what built heritage Northern Ireland has, what is important about this, and why we should consider this important, we have an extensive recording programme.

  • Protection

With partners such as Planning Service and DARD, we protect the Historic Environment through legislation and policy (Monuments in State Care, Scheduled Historic Monuments, Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas etc).

  • Conservation

We support the conservation of protected historic structures through grant aid, management agreements, direct works, advice, encouragement and enforcement.
